On keeping a log of parameters

I lost a favourite piece last year because I could not remember the numbers behind it. Now every sketch gets a line in a plain text file.

The log is nothing special: a date, a name, the pattern type and its parameters. A year of those lines is a surprisingly good record of what I was interested in, and which ideas I kept coming back to.

It also makes it easy to return to an old piece and change one number. Some of the best works in the gallery are second versions of something I thought was finished.

If you generate patterns of your own, my only advice is to write the parameters down before you close the window. Everything else you can reconstruct.
